ASAB in full force at AIAA Aviation 2023

Langley’s Aeronautics Systems Analysis Branch (ASAB), part of the Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate, had a strong presence at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Aviation Forum in San Diego, California. 

During the week of June 12, ASAB members represented numerous Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) projects including Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology (RVLT), Advanced Air Transport Technology (AATT), Commercial Supersonic Technology (CST), System Wide Safety (SWS), Transformational Tools and Technologies (TTT), and the Portfolio Analysis and Management Office (PAMO).

Ersin Ancel, Nat Blaesser, Nick Borer, Bijan Fazal, Zack Frederick, Tom Hallock, Michael Patterson, Ben Phillips, Sriram Rallabhandi, Tricia Revolinsky, Jesse Quinlan, Gabino Martinez Rodriguez, Doug Wells,  Laura White, and Siena Whiteside attended the weeklong event and presented eight technical papers:

  • Design Exploration of a Mild Hybrid Electrified Aircraft Propulsion Concept

  • Thermal Environments and Margin Guidelines for NASA’s X-57 “Maxwell” Flight Demonstrator
  • Recent Enhancements to Modeling Sonic Boom Propagation using Augmented Burgers’ Equation

Members of Team ASAB also chaired over a dozen technical paper sessions, attended numerous AIAA committee meetings, greeted attendees from all over the world at the NASA booth in the exhibit hall, participated in a “speed mentoring” session as part of the AIAA Young Professionals activities, and served as part of a Forum 360 Panel entitled “Distributed Electric Propulsion – Lessons Learned from the X-57.”
