Julie Williams-Byrd is the deputy director of the Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate (SACD) at NASA Langley Research Center.
Mrs. Williams-Byrd previously held the position of NASA Langley’s Chief Technologist where she served as the principal advisor and advocate on matters concerning center-wide technology initiatives, policy, and programs. She provided the strategy and leadership that integrates NASA’s technology development and open innovation activities. She coordinated with center directorates to align the agency’s technology investments, meeting mission requirements while filling gaps, anticipating future needs, and minimizing duplication of effort.
Prior to that, Mrs. Williams-Byrd served as senior systems analyst for SACD’s Space Mission Analysis Branch (SMAB) as lead technology and capability analyst for the agency’s lunar exploration for NASA’s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD).
Her civil service career began as an electro-optics engineer in the Laser Systems Branch (LSB) within NASA Langley’s Engineering Directorate, where she performed research and developed unique laser systems for lidar instruments that performed remote sensing of the atmosphere.
She is a passionate mentor and STEM supporter and engages in public outreach, education, and awareness efforts for inspiring and developing the next generation of STEM professionals.
